Corrugated Sheets - An Ideal Siding and Roofing Solution

The Indian roofing sector has witnessed an evolution in the past decade. This evolution can be attributed to the industrialization and commercialization taking place at a fast pace not just in India, but worldwide. Add to this, people are now well informed with their options before they make any decisions when looking for siding or roofing solutions. Today, there are a variety of roofing & siding options available such as metal, polycarbonate, plastic, fibreglass, fibrecement, GI, etc. As such, one of the best roofing and siding options in metal roofing sheets is that of corrugated steel sheets. Thanks to their strength and durability, corrugated metal panels have always found their application in roofing and siding for commercial, agricultural and industrial purposes since decades now. They are now gaining popularity as an ideal roofing and siding choice in the residential sector as well. Mentioned below are some of the reasons that make corrugated sheets an ideal choice for industrial, commercial and residential roofing & siding option.

The most commonly used corrugated sheets are made of steel. Steel is an amazing alloy inheriting the superior tensile strength of iron and light weightedness of carbon and other elements. The grooves add to to the strength and makes the sheet impact resistant while also increasing the load bearing capacity. This also gives corrugated steel sheets a higher strength to weight ratio as compared to any other construction material. Listed below are some of the advantages of using a steel corrugated sheet for roofing and siding purposes

Long Lasting & Durable: Steel in itself is a highly long lasting material(can last upto 30 years) and corrugation just adds 20 more years to its life. As understood from above, the rippled shape of corrugated sheets renders more surface area contributing to the durability. The groove shape provides minimal plain area thereby avoiding bends & cracks caused by objects falling on the surface.

Braves Weather and Other Environmental Hazards
Corrugated steel sheets are engineered such that they can withstand a wide range of harsh weather conditions, bear amazing weight and resist damage frequently faced by industries such as fire, pests, tornadoes, moisture penetration etc. The composition of steel also discourages the growth of molds and algaes and protects against rust. A corrugated siding will never warp or buckle. In fact, it is four-times more resistant to warping, buckling or thermal expansion than vinyl siding products.

Easy to Install: Since corrugated steel sheets are lightweight, they are easy to install and handle. As roofs, they do not put undue weight to the buiding structure; as sidings, they are tough against lateral wind pressure and safer than heavier alternatives.

If you are looking for corrugated sheets for your warehouse, commercial establishment, agricultural use or for residential purposes, Tata BlueScope Steel - one of the top industrialshed manufacturers and provider of roofing solutions - supplies steel sheets of various types according to your specific needs. Wall of Steel - Winsome Wall Claddings to Get You Covered from All Sides

Wall cladding refers to the layers that are added on the basic structure to create a strong metal envelope over the walls. The functional idea of cladding is to protect the structure such as a factory or a warehouse from external elements such as wind, fire and water that may prove as a potential hazard to the structure. Claddings also serve to add a superior aesthetic appeal to the pre-engineered metal buildings. Depending on your needs and wants, different types of cladding materials can be used. While there are quite a few choices in metal, one of the primary reasons steel is a popular metal cladding material is its resiliency. Tata BlueScope Steel is one of the best wall cladding & roofing sheet manufacturers you can consult, before deciding on the material to be used for the best and most effective wall cladding.

When you combine the right material with a well-detailed plan, your metal cladding can create a structure that is not just fundamentally strong but also architecturally exciting. That said, there are several performance factors to consider to use steel’s strengths to your advantage in a project. Let us ponder on them in a sequence.

Durability: While all metals are quite durable, steel exhibits a high level of durability as compared to other metals. They are hard to scratch or form a dent. Steel is the recommended cladding material in hail-prone areas because of its impact-resistance, as well as in hurricane zones because of its wind-resistance, and in areas subject to wildfires because of its fire-resistance. Salt, which is a catalyst of corrosion, is present in generous amounts in the air of coastal areas. This requires a protective layer on the cladding such as zinc and aluminium. Galvalume steel, which contains 55% aluminium, 43.5% zinc and 1.5% silicon, is perfect for applications that call for high corrosion resistance and also heat reflectivity. Tata BlueScope Steel walling profiles are manufactured from high strength ZINCALUME® steel and colour coated steel COLORBOND® steel exhibiting wider spanning capabilities with better uplift performance.

Fire resistance: Unlike other elements of nature, fire is the most frequent cause of damage for industries and factories. A steel cladding is extremely fire-resistant. It insulates against sparks, preventing a fire from consuming your factory or establishment. Steel is classified as a non-combustible roofing material with a Class A rating - the highest possible rating.

Energy Efficiency: Steel cladding panels are more energy-efficient than other cladding materials. The energy efficiency of steel can be categorised under “Solar Reflectivity.” The physical properties of steel cause the radiant heat from outside during hot summers, or inside during cold winters, to bounce off steel roof panels. This means your AC finds it easy stopping heat from entering in and your heating system doesn’t have to work as hard when the heat is trying to escape.

Aesthetics: One of the more overlooked aspects while considering material for cladding is the visual appeal of that material. Steel cladding panels score highly in this department as well, considering their clean architectural look and vibrant colors. For these reasons, steel panels are growing in popularity among commercial buildings. Aesthetic appearance, longer life, environment-friendly, the capability of sustaining high wind, and impact load, are some of the added benefits of the corrugated sheet from Tata BlueScope Steel.

Environmental Impact:
Steel is a recyclable metal. Recycled steel contributes to almost all the steel sheets that are manufactured. Plus, steel claddings have an exceptionally long life, which means, they are less likely to be discarded frequently. All these factors make steel a clean metal for your cladding needs!

Why architect love steel buildings?

The main agenda behind constructing any building or structure is that it should do complete justice to the vision of the people behind it.  The people who’ve had an idea of creating an environmentally sustainable, aesthetically appealing and an economical building, that serves to be more than just a residential or a commercial property. A building that stands as a modern construction marvel that creates a longing in every viewer’s eyes.

That being said, the people being discussed are the designers who conceptualize the idea behind the aesthetics and functionality of the building.  These people are at the helm of making the best of use of the financier’s money and creating a design that offers unmatched quality, experience and satisfaction. Most importantly, a design that can be built in viable timeframes while giving more for every Rupee spent. As designers face this ever-evolving challenge, many of them are looking towards using steel buildings or pre-engineered steel fabrications to achieve their vision in a cost-efficient and time-efficient way, without compromising on quality.

Materials like wood or plastic often fail to live up to a designer’s expectations in terms of consistency, longevity and quick processing times. Steel is proven to show tremendous results in all the aforementioned and offers great benefits over other materials. This is why designers are becoming more and more dependant on steel-based buildings for most of their projects.

Here are 5 critical reasons why designers prefer steel buildings

     1. Simpler to design:
With steel based solutions, designers have the option to use highly sophisticated software platforms and tools to create space efficient 3D models and futuristic design renderings that offer great value for the budget of the project.

          2. Super Strength:
Being an alloy, steel is extremely durable because of its high strength to weight ratio compared to other materials. Due to its strong built, steel framings don’t have to be very thick in design and can be withstand high tension.

      3. Cost-effective:
Steel is manufactured from existing recyclable materials which drastically brings down the manufacturing cost. The by-products generated from steel manufacturing can be re-used for other construction purposes. Also, steel is completely recyclable and does not create any wastage during its disposal, once it has reached the end of its life span.

      4. High-speed construction:
Steel buildings can pre-engineered in factories as per custom specifications and then can be assembled on site with final installations. The use of prefabricated steel buildings has tremendously increased the speed of construction and shortened the completion timelines.

      5.  Great aesthetics:
When it comes to colour-coated metal solutions, colour-coated steel is the pinnacle of building materials evolution, as steel has excellent colour/paint retention capabilities, superior protection against corrosion or weather damage and offers premium aesthetics for roofing solutions, facades and much more.

What makes COLORBOND® Steel the king of building materials?

Metal building products have shown remarkable results since its very inception, and have replaced all kinds of plastic or PVC based products. Out of all metal products, steel buildings have outperformed all kinds of metal building materials due to its alloy based structure, giving it high strength and longevity.
Over the last couple of centuries, humans have conducted a vast array of experiments using different elements in order to discover the most ideal building material. From corrugated iron products first discovered in 1843 to galvanized iron products and then to steel products. Steel-based products struck the perfect chord with human’s building needs and have evolved dramatically with the use of different elements in combination with steel.  Products like galvanized steel, galvalume steel and weathering steel have been highly successful in various applications.
COLORBOND Steel- The elite building material we were looking for.
As the use of corrugated iron became widespread, a major problem was discovered. The corrugated surface could not retain the paint applied to it and required a lot of repeated paintwork to maintain its aesthetics. A solution to keep the paint permanently on the surface of the metal was direly needed. In the late 20th century, experts found a way to perfectly bond paint to a galvanized iron base. Another breakthrough was made when galvanized iron was coated with zinc to make for the strongest and the most durable alloy in the history of building materials. These 2 discoveries gave rise to a material today known as COLORBOND Steel.
As you can tell, COLORBOND Steel was discovered based on years of extensive research and experimental efforts. This material is by far the most superior material in terms of performance, longevity and colour/paint retention. It is truly the pinnacle of building material evolution and has been serving all kinds of industries for a variety of applications like roofing solutions, pre-fabricated steel buildings and regular steel buildings.
Here are 5 benefits of COLORBOND Steel over other materials
1.       Longer lifespan:
Blending 55% Aluminium with 43.4% Zinc & 1.6% Si in an alloy coating enhances corrosion resistance. This is how most of the COLORBOND Steel is made and it is known to last up to 4 times longer than the conventional pre-painted Zinc coated steel.

2.       Energy Efficient:
COLORBOND® roofs are characterized as solar reflective as they are capable of reflecting a large portion of the sun’s heat. This way, you can keep your energy bills down as COLORBOND roofs inherently keep your interiors cool.

3.       Long-term aesthetics:
Super Durable Polyester Paint is usually applied to the COLORBOND® steel which provides high resistance to chipping, peeling and cracking.  This ensures that the aesthetics of your building stay the same for years and years.

4.       Protection:
COLORBOND Steel is tried and tested for extreme weather conditions and can be used in any kind of region. It has a high heat resistance and can easily last through generations without succumbing to any corrosion or damage.

5.       Eco-friendly:
Steel is 100 % recyclable and is made from materials which are already recycled. This makes COLORBOND Steel extremely eco-friendly and also cost-effective. This quality of COLORBOND Steel has made prefabricated steel buildings highly preferable in green building solutions.

Since its first in the year 1966, over 6 million tonnes of COLORBOND Steel have been produced for various application around the globe. In the initial phase, COLORBOND Steel was available in only 6 colour options. Today, it is available in over 20 colour options.

A Quick Guide to Paint Touch-Ups for Damaged Metal Roofs

Metal sheets are frequently employed in pre-engineered metal buildings, industrial sheds, factories and warehouses as roofing and wall panels. They come pre-painted with a factory-applied, baked-on finish that covers the Galvalume®-coated steel surface. Factory color coating ensures that the process occurs in a regulated environment thereby creating a consistent finish and infusing more durability in them. Metal roofing sheets paint systems have a built-in color and gloss retention that is only achieved through the oven-baked process. While these paint coatings are resistant to many of the potential damages, improper handling and installation can mar and damage the finish. Tools, fasteners and other installation-related components along with the activities can scratch or damage the finish, requiring touch-ups to the paint. Tata BlueScope Steel -one of the leading roofing sheets manufacturers - brings to you some touch-up paint tips to keep in mind if you are dealing with these issues.

Why does color coating matter?
Small blemishes are generally inconsequent and need not be re-painted unless they are visually off. In case the scratch has not penetrated the galvalume steel coating, it is best left untouched as a touch-up paint job can’t match the fade resistance of the original baked-on color coating. However, if a scratch is deeper, it can risk the integrity of the paint and the galvanized coating on the panels. Deep scratches, when not repainted, will result in water gathering in the uneven surface resulting in corrosion and rust. The second case, hence, is eligible for touch-up paint.

Note: if a large area of the panel is damaged, it’s best to just replace the panel. Touch up paints are not intended for deep gorges.

Importance of a proper touch-up system
Most Metal manufacturers provide small containers of paint along with the metal panels anticipating the minor paint touch-ups that will be required later. These paints are the perfect DNA match for your colour coated roofing sheets as they are specifically formulated to be compatible with the factory unit. This makes it important to buy touch-up paint from the manufacturer that produced the original panels. If you seek to buy paint from an external store, you may still find a color match, but you can’t ensure the same protective properties that you would get with a manufacturer.

Methods of Paint touch-ups
Touch-up paint for field application is often available in three types of containers
  1. Paint Pens - Usually the best option, they are highly precise allowing painting only in the affected area.
  2. Small Bottles -  Ideal for larger scratches or scuffs and dings on panels, these bottles come with a small brush to paint.
  3. Spray Cans - Best used for painting small accessories like plumbing vent pipes. They are less efficient against covering scratches though as they end up spraying adjoining areas too.
Prepping before Painting
·         The affected area (the one in need of paint) needs to be made clean and dry and has to be rid of dirt, moisture, chalk, wax, oil, grease, residue, mildew, and other contaminants preferably with a mild solvent, such as Naptha, and a clean cloth.

·         If the surface is glossy, you may need to scrub it off with sandpaper to ensure proper adhesion of paint.

·         Ensure that the touch-up paint is of the same quality and performance as the existing paint on the colour coated steel.

Once the touch-up paint is applied, give it time to dry in a dust-free space. Once you are done, any remaining materials must be disposed of properly and in accordance with local regulations. Save Time With Pre-fab Steel Buildings and Pre-painted Roofing Sheets

Just like in every case, in construction too, time is money. Who would not want a quicker construction when it means less labor cost, less time consumption and more business time. But saving time is just one of the facets, the real deal is a lot more. Steel structures are known to have a much better strength-to-weight ratio than RCC which can also be easily dismantled. Pre- fabricated Warehouse can be shifted or expanded according to the requirements in future. When you add to it the versatility of pre painted roofing sheets, the deal gets complete. Tata BlueScope Steel is one of the leading pre painted roofing sheets manufacturers and provider of steel buildings. When building an industrial shed, prefab steel buildings have various advantages such as:

The quality of make - Prefabricated constructions are manufactured in a controlled and regulated factory environment. When there is a requirement of a factory, the components get the same quality. Whenever there is a requirement, the same quality component is dispatched giving rise to a uniform structure which is caliberated.

Sustainability - Being manufactured in a controlled environment, Tata BlueScope Steel prefabricated buildings are more eco-friendly and also sustainable. Steel is a completely recyclable metal, eliminating the chance of producing useless waste of whatever sort. In fact, most of the steel structures are already made using recycled steel. This ability makes it easier to manufacture and provides it with a longer lifespan.

Flexibility - Prefabricated steel building can be easily increased in length by adding extra bays. Any part can be remoulded according to requirement.

Another aspect that speeds up the construction of steel structures such as industrial sheds and warehouses, is the use of pre painted roofing sheets. Color coated sheets are frequently required by industrial shed manufacturers, garages, go-downs, car parking sheds and warehouses. These sheets are preferred for their qualities like highly durability, flexibility and corrosion resistance and also have high resistivity in thermal weather conditions. Pre painted sheets are produced by direct application of a paint after the application of a treatment and, which in most instances,is a primer onto a steel sheet. For maximum resistance against corrosion, coil-line painting is often done on metallic-coated steels such as zincalume sheet. Coil coated metal can be formed, even with extreme bends and folds, with no damage, loss in surface quality or beauty. The prepainted metal can be formed and shaped with a finish that is actually superior to post-paint.

Tata BlueScope offers roofing solutions that are custom prepainted and ready for fabrication. Manufactured using the most updated technology, this product has a painted finish that is uniform in color, gloss, texture and thickness, with excellent paint adhesion and durability. This combination of metallic coating and paint provides effective resistance against corrosion and enhanced formability. Steel sheets can be readily rollformed, bent and stamped without degradation in the quality of paint.
